Hiking around Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

A very wet, rainy, Sunday forecast in Somerset and what do we do? We load up the van and head of in search of an adventure, that's what we always do. Definitely not one to stay indoors because of a little bit of rain.
So, van loaded up with essentials (snacks, wellies and questionable some coats), we headed off with a rough idea of our destination, Cheddar.
Driving through the Somerset countryside, and somewhere we have lived for over 10 years, yet we haven't been here together as a family. Somerset is a beautiful County with so many places to visit, and blogging Little Wild 'on the road is bringing these places closer than ever! I'm excited to get out and see more.
PARKING -
Lots of spaces at the side of the road, drive up through the shops and cafes, you will pass through the beautiful rocky scenery, and depending on what you are looking at doing and how far away you want to be, then you will find lots of suitable space. These spaces are at the side of a road, and cars do drive quick along here, so be extra cautious if parking with children and dogs. You can also park further down near to the shops in a carpark.
We paid £6 for the day parking.
We enjoyed sitting in our van surrounded by such natural beauty, and eating our lunch. I can imagine it will be busy here in the summer, but January seemed like the perfect time to visit.
PLACES TO EAT -
Not the best experience for us, we all like different places, and most certainly on a budget after Christmas. After a failed attempt at fish and chips, which seemed to be quite expensive and not very appealing, we left the restaurant on a hunt for something better. The whole area is set up for tourists, so lots of choice, however we found a picnic in the van to be more suitable and to be honest, its the whole point in us travelling around in a van. A few places did look lovely though, and we will definitely be going back to try them out at some point.
Cafe's and Pubs to try out on our next visit.
1.Cafe Gorge - A sweet cafe with lovely views and outside seating.
2.The White Hart Pub - Menu sounded really good.
3.Rockface - Looked like a cool venue and seating outside looks great.
We walked up and around the outside areas at Cheddar Gorge, it wasn't the best weather, but we didn't want to pay to go inside the caves on this visit. The local mountain goats went down well with the kids, and watching one running down the main road was particularly amusing. We also had the pleasure of watching a convoy of tractors and military vehicles drive through. A Sunday well spent.
I will definitely be planning a few more trips out this way, its beautiful, and I think we only just scratched the surface, but I personally think it would be better for us if we camped locally.
So, if you have any suggestions of local campsites, please do let me know.
